Editor Alice Cobb forwarded Barks a letter from an irate mother complaining about the story, with a June 4, 1956 note: "We feel it is a fair criticism. We should all watch for this sort of thing, we think - and avoid it as much as possible". The mother's letter must have included a barb about the closing panel of the story, because the editor's note concluded, "In addition, we usually use 'Quiet!' instead of 'Shut up!'"
